The details of your accommodation will be provided a couple of days in advance, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free check-in experience. After settling in, you’re free to explore the myriad attractions around Manali at your own pace.
Manali is a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural richness. You could spend your day strolling through the bustling Mall Road, filled with colorful shops selling local handicrafts, woolen wear, and delicious street food. A visit to the ancient Hadimba Temple, nestled amidst a dense cedar forest, offers a peek into the town’s rich heritage. For nature lovers, a walk along the Beas River or a trip to the tranquil Van Vihar Park could be an ideal way to spend the afternoon.
As the day progresses, remember to return to the hotel by 4 P.M for an important team meeting. This gathering marks the first official event of your expedition. Here, you’ll meet your fellow adventurers and your trek leader, who will be your guide and mentor throughout this journey. The meeting is an excellent opportunity to know more about the people you’ll be sharing this climbing experience with.
During the briefing session, your trek leader will provide detailed information about the trek, including the route, the weather conditions, the dos and don’ts, and safety measures. This is your chance to ask questions, clarify doubts, and understand what to expect in the coming days.

After a hearty breakfast in Manali, we’ll load our baggage onto vehicles and set off for Dhundi, the starting point of our trek.
The journey to Dhundi is as picturesque as it is exhilarating. As we traverse the winding roads, we’ll witness the captivating beauty of the Solang Valley, a sight that will leave us spellbound. Known for its lush green landscapes, sparkling streams, and vibrant flora, Solang Valley sets the perfect backdrop for the adventure that lies ahead.
Upon arrival at Dhundi, the real adventure begins. We’ll trek towards Bakarthach, walking through dense forests of oak, conifer, and walnut trees. As night falls, a delicious dinner awaits at the campsite, followed by a well-deserved rest under the starlit sky. The third day of our Mount Friendship Peak Expedition dawns early, signaling the start of an exciting and challenging ascent. With our campsite wrapped up, tents packed, and bags ready, we set off by 9 AM, fueled by the anticipation of reaching our next campsite – the curiously named Lady Leg Base Camp.
The trek to Lady Leg is more demanding than the previous day’s trek. Despite covering a similar distance, the trail becomes significantly steeper, testing our stamina and endurance. But fear not! The awe-inspiring views that accompany us throughout the climb serve as the perfect motivation, making every step worth the effort.
As we traverse the vast green meadows that we had hiked up during our acclimatization walk, we are treated to a visual feast. We aim to reach the base camp by lunchtime. Here, we’ll apply the skills we learned on Day 2 to pitch our tents and set up camp. If the weather is favorable, the afternoon will be spent venturing to higher, snow-laden patches where we’ll get our first introduction to technical mountaineering equipment. This session is crucial as we learn basic ice craft skills, which will prove indispensable on Summit Day.
The Lady Leg Base Camp, where we’ll spend the next 2-3 nights, is a place of remarkable natural beauty. Rich in verdant hues, it’s a lively spectacle of sheep, shepherd dogs, and free-roaming horses. Thus concludes Day 3 of our expedition – a day of hard work, learning, and unforgettable experiences.

The fourth day of our Mount Friendship Peak Expedition begins with a hearty breakfast, providing us with the necessary fuel for the challenging trek ahead. Today’s journey, expected to take between 2-3 hours one way, will test our strength and resilience as we traverse steeper slopes and slippery terrain. Equipped with snow boots and carrying all our mountaineering gear, we set off for Summit Camp around 10 AM.
As we ascend toward the camp, we bid farewell to the lush green meadows and venture into a landscape dominated by loose rocks and deep snow. Walking in snow boots is akin to learning to walk anew. It might seem difficult initially, but as we tread deeper into the snow and adjust to the boots, the walk becomes progressively easier. Despite the thick snow cover, which requires cautious steps, the sight of the towering peaks of Hanuman Tibba, Priyadarshini, Indra Asan, and Deo Tibba keeps us motivated and guides our path.
Upon reaching the designated campsite, chosen based on water availability, we set up a tent and store all our equipment inside. This strategy serves a dual purpose – acclimatization and lightening our load for the next day’s trek by already having some of our gear halfway to the summit. If time and weather permits, we’ll use this opportunity to familiarize ourselves further with the technical equipment and learn crucial skills required for ice and mountain climbing. Emphasizing the importance of teamwork on the mountain face is also a key part of this training session.
Following the mountaineering principle of ‘Climb High, Sleep Low,’ we descend back to Lady Leg Base Camp for the night. This practice helps our bodies acclimatize better to the high altitude and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
Day 4 of our expedition gives us a taste of the challenges and thrills that lie ahead. As we navigate through the snow-covered landscapes, we not only push our physical boundaries but also learn valuable lessons in resilience, teamwork, and respect for nature. The day we’ve all been waiting for finally arrives – the day we summit Mount Friendship Peak. Undoubtedly the most challenging yet rewarding day of our trek, it demands not just physical strength but mental resilience too. After a couple of hours of rest, we start on our final ascent between 1 and 2 am, armed with essential gear and head torches crucial for a night climb.
Nourishment in the form of dry fruits, eggs, and sandwiches will fuel us through the grueling 7-8 hour steep ascent. The initial half-hour is fairly manageable, featuring flat snow with occasional bumps. However, forty minutes into our climb, the challenge intensifies. Whether it’s negotiating random ice boulders jutting out from the ice bed or navigating rocky landscapes with snow boots and crampons when the snow recedes, every step tests our endurance.
After three hours of maneuvering this tough terrain, we encounter smoother slopes. Despite their steepness, which requires the use of ice axes and technique, they offer some relief to our feet. We aim to reach the col between 05:30 and 06:00 AM, just in time to witness a magnificent sunrise that bathes Manali and the Pir Panjal range in golden hues—an unforgettable spectacle.
Following a brief rest at the col, we resume our trek, walking narrow ridges on a continuously steep incline all the way up to the summit. It’s a sharp three-hour ascent from the col to the mountain’s shoulder, followed by another 2.5-3 hours of climbing to the summit. Depending on the group’s speed, we anticipate reaching the summit between 9-10 AM.
The moment we reach the summit, all the struggles and challenges fade away, replaced by a sense of accomplishment and awe at the panoramic views that greet us. After soaking in the glorious sights, we begin our descent. This phase can be tricky as the melting ice makes the surface slippery and harder to grip.
Our goal is to reach Summit Camp between 1 and 2 PM. Once there, we quickly pack up the tents and immediately descend to Lady Leg. It’s essential to lose height as quickly as possible to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
As we spend the night at Lady Leg, we give our bodies much-needed rest. Looking back at the day’s adventure, we realize how far we’ve come, not just in terms of the distance covered or the height scaled, but in terms of personal growth and learning. As we drift off to sleep, the memories of the day—the challenges, the camaraderie, the breathtaking views, and the triumph of reaching the summit—fill our thoughts, marking the successful completion of an unforgettable trekking expedition.
The sixth day of our expedition is kept as a reserve day for the summit attempt. Mountaineering, by its very nature, is unpredictable. By having a buffer day, we ensure that we don’t rush our summit attempt and compromise safety.
If we’ve successfully summited on Day 5, this extra day gives us a chance to rest and recover at Lady Leg Base Camp. However, if the summit attempt on Day 5 was unsuccessful due to any unforeseen circumstances, Day 6 offers us another opportunity. After a hearty breakfast, we pack our gear and prepare for the trek back to Dhundi.
Descending from the high-altitude camp, the trail takes us through the same breathtaking landscapes that we had trekked up days ago. However, seeing them in reverse offers a fresh perspective and a chance to appreciate their beauty anew. The path is a mixture of steep and gentle slopes, with the lush green meadows gradually giving way to dense forests of oak, conifer, and walnut trees.
Walking in the cool mountain breeze, we’re accompanied by the melodious chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves underfoot. It’s a serene and peaceful experience, offering ample time for reflection on the incredible journey we’ve undertaken. The trek back to Dhundi is expected to take around 4 hours, with plenty of breaks in between to rest and soak in the mesmerizing views.

Swena was kind enough to accommodate us at the last minute since our trek to Tarsar Marsar was cancelled at the last minute with another company. Being a small group, we were able to start early in the morning, cover the hard sections before the sun came up & reach the campsite well before the evening rains. We were guided by Neil from Advenchar through the trek who is as well versed with the mountains as one can possibly get. The local Kashmiri team fed us to our hearts content. Bajjis, gulab jamoons, soup, kawa, sooji ka halwa was what I relished the most during the evening snacks. Mountain stories from Neil, crystal clear weather during the trek, the camaraderie among the co-trekkers & the ever helpful team made the pretty pretty KGL trek all the more memorable. Only disappointment was the trash at Vishnusar & Ganagabal campsites. Wished we had camped further away at these 2 sites. But the remaining 4 campsites were clean & beautiful. I would definitely do my next trek with Advenchar! The team also patiently answered the many, many questions I had & were always available. True enough, I had a great & smooth experience with the KGL trek. The guides & helpers were experienced, knowledgeable & helpful. The trek timings were well planned; we often set off earlier & managed to avoid the rain. The food was delicious, varied & planned according to the trek. The tents were of high quality, withstanding the evening rain.
