Mt. Bhagirathi 2 is the second highest peak of the Bhagirathi massif, and it stands tall at a height of 6512 M. It is located in the Gangotri region of the Garhwal Himalayas.
The Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition is perfect for trekkers who’re looking to start their mountaineering journey. This can be your first mountaineering expedition. Although, it is recommended that you have some experience in high altitude trekking and a few technical trekking experiences under your belt.
From the summit, you get amazing views of revered mountains like Mt. Shivling, Mt. Meru, Mt. Shivling, and a holistic view of the Gangotri region. Gangotri region is considered powerful for its reverberating spiritual energy, and to have a bird’s eye view from the top of Mt. Bhagirathi 2 is overwhelming for many.

The Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition starts from the holy town of Gangotri. The drive from Dehradun to Gangotri is a 241 Km road journey through winding mountain roads. The vehicles will pick you up at Dehradun I.S.B.T at 6:30 am. You can expect to reach Gangotri by evening.
Once you reach Gangotri, we’ll be attending the evening aarti at Gangotri temple, and take blessings for the successful completion of the expedition.
If you’re coming directly to Gangotri, we suggest you start early in the morning so you can reach Gangotri by evening. To reach Gangotri, you can find a shared taxi from Rispana Pul in Dehradun till Uttarkashi. You can expect to reach Uttarkashi by 12 pm. After that, you’ll need to take another shared taxi to reach Gangotri via Harsil.
We’ll be spending the night at a guest house in Gangotri.
Today is the first day you’ll be trekking for the Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition. We’ll be waking up early, having breakfast, and start our trek towards Bhojwasa. The entire trek is in the Gangotri National Park.
The trek today is of gentle and easy ascent. It is a well-paved path and you will also meet several pilgrims on the way to Gaumukh and Gangotri glacier. The views of Sudarshan Parbat will accompany you soon after starting your trek. You will be trekking beside the Bhagirathi river. You can hear the gentle and meditating sound of the Bhagirathi river flowing down below.
Once you reach Chirbasa, rest and have some snacks and continue your trek towards the Bhojwasa campsite. The trail to Bhojwasa has several landslide-prone sections as well so we will need to be careful and watchful for any falling rocks.
Just before you reach Bhojwasa, you will see views of the whole valley ahead of you. This is an amazing viewpoint. Once you reach Bhojwasa, you can get the first views of Mt. Shivling. The Bhagirathi river flows just beside the campsite.
We will be trekking to Nandanvan today, the base camp for the Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition. The trail to Nandanvan continues up and beyond Gaumkh, the snout of the Gangotri glacier. We’ll be crossing the moraine and glacier and continue towards the left and to Nandanvan – a beautiful meadow.
Once we reach, we’ll be resting and let our bodies acclimatize to the high-altitude environment. We’ll be spending the time discussing the climbing route and observing the features of the mountain. We’ll also have a briefing and training session in the evening to refresh the technical climbing skills.
Have your dinner and rest well for the night.
We’ll be spending the day resting our bodies and acclimatizing to the high altitude. We’ll do a small excursion hike to Vasu Ki Tal, from where you can see the amazing Vasu Ki Glacier, Vasuki Parbat, Mt. Satopanth, and even the route to Kalindi Khal.
The evening will be for practicing the technical skills. Have dinner and rest.
We will be doing the load ferry to the Advance Base Camp of the Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition.
We’ll be moving higher up the mountain, and shifting our camp to Camp I today. Camp I is at 5300 M so we’ll be gradually moving up the mountain to let our bodies acclimatize properly. Have good food and drink enough water, and rest here for the night.
Today is the load ferry day. We’ll be doing the load ferry up to Camp 2 and return back to Camp 1 for the night.
It is the most important day of the Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition. We’ll be pushing for the summit today of Mt. Bhagirathi 2 today, which stands tall at 6512 M. We’ll be starting early in the morning around 3 AM. Once you reach the summit, feast your eyes upon the incredible views of the Gangotri region and surrounding peaks.
We’ll make our way back to Camp 1. Rest and Rejoice and Camp 1.
Today is a rest day. You can explore the area – Tapovan, Vasu Ki Tal, or just chill around the campsite as you please.
This is the last day that you’ll be trekking amidst the mountains. So, take your time while descending. Remember to look back and relive the days of the expedition and the majestic views that you experienced.
You can expect to reach Gangotri by evening, and make it back before the evening aarti. We’ll be staying and resting in Gangotri for the night. We’ll also have a debriefing session where you can share your experience with the other members of the expedition.
Today is the day we’ll be parting ways after the Mt. Bhagirathi 2 Expedition. It is sure to be an emotional moment for everyone after spending three weeks in the mountains together on an expedition.
Your vehicles will pick you up in Gangotri in the morning and leave you at Dehradun I.S.B.T by 7 PM. If you plan to continue your travels, you can say goodbye to us at Gangotri.
We keep buffer days in our long treks or expeditions because of any hurdles we might face during the expedition, like bad weather including heavy snowfall, or rain. In such situations, it becomes risky to continue climbing.
