The expedition to Mentok Kangri is an adventure of a lifetime! Standing at an imposing altitude of 6,250 m, the Mentok Kangri is one of the highest summits in India and is, without a doubt, a trekker magnet.
This 11-day trek is not easy and requires experience and training. If you are a seasoned trekker looking to test your limits, you probably have Mentok Kangri on your bucket list!
Filled with adventure at every step, this trek takes you through alpine meadows, winding valleys, ancient villages, tranquil lakes, and more! Lose yourself in the mind-blowing beauty of this magnanimous peak tucked cozily in the Rupshu Valley of Ladakh!
The best time to plan this trek is mid-July to October. It’s best to stay away from the colder months, as the winters in Ladakh are harsh beyond words.
Leh, Ladakh
4 P.M.
Altitude: 3,500 m (11,500 ft)
The starting point for our trek is Leh, Ladakh. You can get here through various routes, but the best option is to take a flight or travel by road. After your arrival, get acclimatized to the change in altitude as we rest for the night at a hotel.
The second day of our Mentok Kangri Trek will also be spent in Leh, as we take it nice and slow and let our body get accustomed to being at 3500m. so that it can resist the challenges of high altitude.
You can spend this day however you like! Go on a healing trip to the Spituk Gompa monastery, explore the Magnetic Hill, and visit the meeting point of the Indus and Zanskar river! Your options are endless! Meanwhile, we will also finish the paperwork and permission formalities in Leh for the Mentok Kangri expedition.
While here, don’t forget to taste the mouth-watering local cuisine!
Once satisfied with a hearty dinner, get a good night’s sleep!
Distance: 210 km
Time Taken: 8-10 hours
Altitude: 4,500 m (14,750 ft)
We will start quite early on day 3 of the Mentok Kangri Trek and hit the road.
Traveling along the Leh-Manali highway for about 10 hours, we will reach our destination for one day and two nights, Karzok.
We will spend the night at a guesthouse.
The difference in altitude between Leh and Karzok is quite big, so we will take a rest day here and let our bodies adjust to the drastic changes.
You will have a whole day to wander and explore different aspects of this isolated village, so spend it as you see fit!
Mingle with the locals, or stroll along the beautiful Tso Moririr lake!
Despite being ‘picture perfect,’ the Tso Moriri is not a popular tourist attraction, so if you are craving solitude and peace, this pristine lake is your go-to!
Most importantly, take sufficient time out for rest; you will need it for the upcoming days!
Distance: 2 Km
Time Taken: 2-3 Hours
Altitude: 4,600 m (7315 ft.)
On our 5th day, we will trek from Karzok to reach Karzok Phu. It’s a short and easy trek, only 2-3 hours.
Known for being the hosting ground for the 2O21 Nomadic Festival of Ladakh, Karzok Phu is situated right along the Tso Moriri lake, making it the perfect spot to lay your head for the night!
Distance: 8 Km
Time Taken: 6-7 Hours
Altitude: 5,250 m (17.250 ft)
Things will start to get interesting as we make our way toward the Mentok Kangri base camp!
It will be a 6 hours trek to reach our last campsite. We are just one trek away from the summit of Mentok Kangri!
The steep ascent, paired with a considerable drop in temperature and oxygen levels, will pose quite a challenge, so be prepared!
But you will probably forget about it as soon as the gorgeous peaks of Parcha Kangri and Golap Kangri come into view!
Set up camp and get a good night’s rest; your body deserves it after such strenuous physical activity.
Continuously changing altitudes, dropping temperatures, and declining oxygen levels must have left you haggard.
But no worries, we will take a rest day at the base camp to rejuvenate ourselves and ensure that our body is accustomed to high altitude.
Relax and take it easy! We will go for an acclimatization hike uphill and utilize the rest of the day to pack up our gear and double-check for safety and precaution.
Get sufficient sleep and rest for the night. The real adventure begins tomorrow!
Distance:
Time Taken: 10-12 Hours
Altitude: 6,250 m (20,500 ft)
The day we have all been looking forward to is finally here! The Summit Day!
Besides being the most exciting, it is also the most challenging. We will start super early, before the break of dawn, and navigate through a snowy trail.
Besides being a steep trek uphill, you will also come across rocks, boulders, and moraines. So, be very cautious and sure-footed about every step.
While this might be daunting, don’t let fear get the better of you! You have made it this far; why give up now?
Nothing can come between you and the glorious summit of Mentok Kangri!
Once you reach the ridge, the summit is only one and a half hours away. Brace yourselves! You will witness an exquisite view that will make your jaws drop!
For the first time in days, you will be able to view the Tso Moriri lake, end to end, painted orange with the first rays of the rising sun!
This unparalleled experience will remain engraved in your hearts forever!
Once you have fully absorbed all the wonders around you, we will descend to the Base camp and spend the night.
This is a reserve day; if we cannot reach the summit the previous day due to bad weather, we will attempt it for a second time today.
On our 10th day, we will retrace our steps and descend continuously until we reach Karzok village.
With the memory of the ‘postcard worthy’ summit view fresh in our minds, we will retire for the night at a guest house!
A 10-hour drive from Karzok will bring us back to Leh.
Now the time has come to part ways with our trek guide, trekking mates, and other support staff.
We know you might be feeling blue because the thrill and excitement have come to an end, but the fond memories you have collected and the exhilarating challenges you have overcome will surely cheer you up!
Turn that frown upside down, and start planning your next trek now!
Mentok Kangri is a 6,250-meter peak located in the Rupshu Valley of Ladakh. It is one of the most popular trekking peaks in the region and provides an exciting challenge for adventurers. However, it is not without its difficulties.
The route to the base camp involves trekking through the Ruphsu Plateau with isolated valleys and high passes, making it physically demanding. The terrain can be challenging due to its rocky nature and steep inclines. Additionally, the high altitude makes it difficult to acclimatize and can cause fatigue and altitude sickness if proper precautions are not taken.
The climb itself is also challenging due to its technical difficulty. The route requires experienced mountaineers as sections of rock climbing involve traversing glaciers and snowfields. This means climbers must be well-equipped with appropriate gear, such as crampons, ice axes, ropes, harnesses, and other safety equipment.
In addition to these physical challenges, Mentok Kangri presents mental obstacles that climbers must overcome to reach the summit. The extreme weather conditions can make it difficult for climbers to stay motivated during their ascent, and they must remain focused on their goal despite any setbacks they may encounter.
Mentok Kangri is a gratifying experience for those willing to take on its challenges. You can conquer this majestic peak with careful preparation, determination, and proper guidance!
All participants are expected to be confident that they are physically and mentally fit and able to complete the itinerary of their chosen event as defined in the itinerary.
