The Kalihani Pass trek is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This 4800 m trek, between the fascinating valleys of Kangra and Kullu of Himachal Pradesh, is the lesser-known gateway to Bara Bhangal and perfectly combines elements of beauty and pleasure with that thrill and excitement!

This 8-day trek takes you away from the conventional paths, allowing you to witness nature at its finest and discover some of the most pristine, untouched parts of Himachal Pradesh!

Thus, there are quite a few steep slopes and unpredictable terrains studded with rugged scree and moraine that we’ve got to traverse. While it is an absolute joyride for seasoned trekkers, it can be too challenging for a newbie! Kalihani Pass trek difficulty level can be considered moderate.

July to October is the best time to plan your  Kalihani Pass trek. You’re met with pleasant weather during the day and mild temperatures during the night! While you may find hints of snow along most of the trail, it is not nearly enough to be a hindrance!

Kalihani Pass Trek Itinerary

Day 1Manali to Jammu Paani via Sangchar

Distance: 33 km (30 km drive, 3 km trek)
Time Taken: 6 Hours
Altitude: 2,340 m (7,677 ft)

The meeting point for our trek to the Kalihani Trek is in Manali. After arrival, we will have a hearty breakfast, following which we will hit the road.

A 1.5-hour drive will take us to Sangchar. From here on, the trekking begins! A continuous ascent of 2000 ft and meandering zig-zag trails might make this trek difficult.

But worry not, from the first day itself, you will be met with magical landscapes dotted with lush greenery and exquisite flowers like Geranium and Anemone!

After about 3-4 hours, we will reach our campsite for the day, Jammu Paani. Surrounded by magnanimous oak trees on the one side and dense, bushy meadows on the other, Jammu Paani is a perfect cozy spot to rest for the night!

Day 2Jammu Paani to Paani Dhar

Distance: 8 Km
Time Taken: 6-7 Hours
Altitude: 3,000 m (9,842 ft)

The second day starts very early, as we have much to cover today! The trekking party is headed towards our next campsite, Paani Dhar.

The trek is about 6-7 hours long, with ascending and descending trails. The unique contrast of the oak forests on one side and rich meadows on the other will keep you company!

The gorgeous Maheli Thatch will also make an appearance during this trek, so be prepared for some awe-inducing views of vast valley openings and snow-clad peaks of the Pir Panjal!

After a long day of trekking, you will be overcome with relief on reaching Paani Dhar! This soothing meadow will take away all your exhaustion!

So set up camp and rest up for the night!

Day 3Paani Dhar to Riyali Thatch

Distance: 6 km
Time Taken: 3-4 hours
Altitude:
3,647 m (11,965 ft)

After the first two days of traversing challenging terrains, today will be like a breath of fresh air!

After a steep (but brief) ascent across a rocky patch of land with a tranquil stream of water gushing through it, the trail will get considerably easier!

After trekking for about 3-4 hours, we will reach our third campsite, Riyali Thatch.

And just like all the sites we have camped in, this campsite will also be breathtaking!

Get a good night’s rest amidst the limitless greenery and a stunning valley of flowers!

Day 4Riyali Thatch to Saghor

Distance: 8 Km
Time Taken: 7-8 hours
Altitude:
4,000 m (13,123 ft)

Leaving the Riyali Thatch, we will embark on another easy trek. We will descend continuously to reach a snow bridge over a stream fed by the Kalihani Pass!

After a few hours, we will come across a ridge. Better fasten your seatbelts, as you will witness a view from a fairy tale.

The grassy mountain slopes on either side of the ridge are richly adorned with bright, colorful alpine flowers; juniper trees, sprouting here and there, add to its charm!

After the ridge, a zig-zag trail leads us to the Saghor campsite. As you lose yourself in crystal clear views of the Pir Panjal ranges against the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped passes, let your body get acclimatized to the high altitude.

As we climb the Pass the following day, have a good night’s rest.

Day 5Saghor to Kalihani Pass Trek and back to Saghor

Distance:  5 Km
Time Taken: 8-10 Hours
Altitude: 4,800 m (15,748 ft.)

The most exciting day of the trek is here! We will be making our way to the Kalihani Pass!

Our day will start just before the dawn break so we can enjoy a glorious sunrise over the Saghor Campsite! Such an incredible opportunity does not come twice, so savor every moment!

Afterward, we will start ascending gradually along the snowy patch. After a few miles, we will come across a waterfall; the trail will begin slanting steeper from here onwards.

At this point, you are almost right below the Pass, as the remarkable Pir Panjal peaks, like Mt Deo Tibba and Mt Indrasaan, come within view!

From here on, the trail will be marked with considerable snow, making the path challenging. Despite being within a close range of the Pass, you won’t be able to see it quite yet.

Only after navigating through a third slope of snow will the Kalihani Pass be visible.

Passing through numerous slippery slopes, rocky terrains, and uneven paths must not have been easy! But all your efforts are now finally worth it!

The bird’s eye view of the Pir Panjal on one side and the Bhara Bhangal on the other is nothing short of mind-blowing! You might be hypnotized by the scenic beauty, but don’t forget to get some good photos!

After enjoying the marvelous view, we descend continuously and carefully through moraines and scree until we reach the Saghor base camp.

With the picture of the view from the Kalihani Pass still fresh in our hearts, we will retire for the night.

Day 6Saghor to Rani Sui

Distance: 12 Km
Time Taken: 7-8 Hours
Altitude: 3,400 m (11,155 ft)

On the 6th day, we will descend to where our trek started, but along the way, we will also catch a glimpse of some other exotic attractions!

As we descend from Saghor towards Riyali, we will make a detour to Rani Sui, an elliptical lake comfortably tucked within a stretch of dense meadows.

Considered sacred by the locals, this tranquil lake is a sight to behold, as you can also sneak a peek of the majestic Dhauladar Range from here.

Camping along a lake will surely be a memorable experience!

Day 7Rani Sui to Lamadugh

Distance: 7 Km
Time Taken: 6-8 Hours
Altitude: 3,000 m (9,843 ft)

The next stop on our way back is Lamadugh. But before that, we will make a pit stop at Khanpara Tibba.

This 4000 m peak will give you an unobstructed view of the Beas River valley.

The ascent to Khanpara Tibba might appear daunting after a few days of descending continuously.

The ascent is only a brief before we come across a level walking path, followed by another short and our last climb.

After we absorb the beauty of the Beas River Valley from the summit of the Khanpara, we will start to descend again until we reach Lamadugh.

Lamadugh is surrounded by oak forests and is the comfiest spot to rest for the last night of our trek!

Day 8Lamadugh to Manali

Distance: 7 Km
Time Taken: 4-5 Hours
Altitude: 2,000 m (6,562 ft)

After an exhilarating week, our Kalihani Pass trek is finally coming to a close!

As the sun rises to mark the last day of our trek, I am sure everyone’s hearts are feeling a bit heavy.

But, as the saying goes, ‘All good things must come to an end.’ So here we are, heading toward where it all started.

After a filling yet light breakfast, we will descend through thick pine forests to reach Manali.

On reaching the road head, you can walk down to the Hadimba Temple. From here, Mall Road in Manali is only 20 mins away!

As you reach the city center of Manali (Mall Road), that’s where we part ways!

These seven days have been incredible, and we hope the fond memories and thrilling challenges will be by your side for a long time!
