Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek Itinerary

Day 1Manali to Khanol & Trek to Chika

Distance: 20 Km (Drive) & 2 Km (Trek)
Time Taken: 1.5 Hours (Drive) & 2-3 Hours (Trek)
Altitude: Manali (2050 m), Khanol (2,820 m), Chika (3,200 m)

Day 1 of the Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek is a journey that starts in Manali and ends in Chika. The trek begins with a drive from Manali to Khanol, a small village at an altitude of 9,250 feet. From here, trekkers will start their ascent towards Chika, located at an altitude of 10,500 feet. Along the way, they will be able to take in the stunning views of the Pir Panjal Range and its surrounding peaks like Indrasan and Deo Tibba.

The trekking trail is mostly composed of rocky terrain and lush green forests of pine, spruce, fir, oak & silver birches. As you make your way up the mountain slopes, you will come across several small meadows, ideal spots for camping or just taking in the beautiful landscape.

You can enjoy rest as you reach Chika before continuing your trek towards Deo Tibba Base Camp. This day’s trek offers an opportunity for trekkers to get accustomed to the terrain and acclimatize themselves to the high-altitude environment. It also serves as a great introduction to what lies ahead in terms of scenery and adventure!

Day 2Chika to Seri

Distance: 6 km
Time Taken: 5 Hours
Altitude: 3,860 m (12,660 ft)

The second day of the Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek is challenging but rewarding. Starting from Chika, you will ascend to Seri at an altitude of 3,860 m. The trek begins with a gradual climb through lush green forests of pine and spruce trees. As you ascend, the views become more spectacular, with stunning vistas of the snow-capped peaks in the distance.

The trail then winds its way up through meadows and pastures along the Duhangan Nala, where you can take in breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. You will also pass by tiny gujjar huts along the way, allowing you to interact with locals and learn about their culture and traditions.

Once you reach Seri, you will be rewarded with a large meadow with the Dunhangan Nala flowing through it. This is also a great place to camp for the night as it offers plenty of flat ground for pitching tents and setting camp. After setting up camp, you can explore nearby waterfalls or take some time to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that this place has to offer.

At sunrise on Day 2, you will be treated to an incredible sight as the sun rises over the mountains casting its golden rays across them.

Day 3Seri to Tainta

Altitude: 4,130 m (13,550 ft.)

This day will be a challenging yet rewarding experience. The trek starts from Seri and ends at Tainta, covering a distance of approximately 2.5 km. The trail takes you through alpine meadows filled with wildflowers, rivers, and streams. You will also witness stunning views of the snow-capped peaks in the distance.

The trek from Seri to Tainta is steep and requires a certain level of physical fitness. At an altitude of 4,130 m, the air is thin, and the temperature can drop below freezing. As you make your way up, take some time to enjoy the stunning landscapes that surround you.

The trail eventually leads you to a beautiful lake at the base of Tainta, surrounded by lush green meadows and snow-capped peaks. This is an excellent spot for taking a break, enjoying the scenery, and having a hot cup of tea and lunch as we set up camp for the night.

Enjoy watching the sun go down from your vantage point as you take in the serene atmosphere of this place. As night falls, you can witness a sky full of stars, providing an unforgettable end to the third day of your trek.

Day 4Tainta to Mini Chandratal via Deo Tibba Base Camp & Back to Tainta

Distance: 10 km 
Time Taken: 7 hours
Max Altitude: 4,580 m (15,030 ft.)

This is the longest and most rewarding day of the trek. You will start from Tainta and go up to the Deo Tibba Base Camp. The trail begins with a gradual climb through the Tainta grassland and ascends steeply as you reach the base camp. You may have to cross several small streams on the way.

The Deo Tibba Base Camp is located at an altitude of 4,450 m and offers stunning views of Mt. Deo Tibba, which stands at an impressive 6,001 m. From here, the views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers are simply breathtaking.

Your trail then takes you to the Mini Chandratal, a small lake with crystal-clear waters at 4,580 m and surrounded by snow-capped peaks. This is an ideal spot for taking a break and admiring the beauty of nature.

Once you have enjoyed the views, you will go down to Tainta, passing through meadows and small streams. You will arrive back at Tainta in the evening, tired but satisfied after an incredible day of trekking and exploration. The day will end with a delicious hot meal and sweet dreams as you drift off to sleep.

Day 5Tainta to Chika

Distance: 9 Km
Time Taken: 6 Hrs
Altitude: 3,200 m (10,500 ft)

Today, you will begin your descent toward the Chika campsite. The trek starts with a steep descent from Tainta to Seri. Be very careful with your footing, as there are many loose rocks on the trail.

Once you get to Seri, the trail levels out, the terrain will become more manageable, and you will walk through grasslands while crossing the Duhangan Nala and several streams along the way.

We’ll be retracing our steps back to Chika, the first campsite of the trek. At an altitude of 3200 m (10,500 ft), this camp has a stunning view of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Relax and enjoy the evening, taking in the serene atmosphere of this place after a long day on the trails.

Day 6Chika to Khanol & Drive to Manali

Distance: 2 km Trek & 20 km Drive
Time Taken: 2 Hours Trek, 1 Hour Drive
Altitude: 2,050 m (6,725 ft)

Today marks the end of your trek as you make your way back to Manali. The trail is an easy downhill trek from Chika to Khanol village. The trail passes through beautiful forests and meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Once you get to Khanol, you will board a vehicle that will take you back to Manali. Enjoy the scenic drive as you make your way through lush green valleys and mountains. After an hour, you will reach Manali, concluding your thrilling and adventurous trek to the Deo Tibba Base Camp and Mini Chandratal Lake.

What are the requirements for participation for Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek?

All participants are expected to be confident that they are physically and mentally fit and able to complete the Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek as defined in the itinerary.

Any minors between 10 and 17 years of age must accompany their parent or guardian who assumes full responsibility for them to participate in the adventure activity or event. Any unaccompanied, underage minor will not be allowed to participate in the adventure activity.

What are the things needed to be carried?

Rucksack with rain cover, waterproof & high ankle trekking shoes, one fleece jacket, one down feather/holofoil jacket, raincoat/poncho, three pairs of quick-dry T-shirts and trek pants, 5-6 pairs of socks, balaclava, waterproof hand gloves with liner, a daypack, sunscreen SPF 50+, scarf, towel, lip balm, headlamp/torch, two water bottles of 1 liter, and personal medicines.

What is the Difficulty Level of Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek?

The Deo Tibba Base Camp trek is a moderate-level trek that involves long walking days on uneven terrain filled with rocks, boulders, moraines, and snow. Prior experience of high altitude trekking will help. Although beginners can also participate, but good physical condition and strong mental health are must for a 6-day-long exposure to the unpredictable elements.
