The best time to embark on the Buran Ghati Trek is during the pre-monsoon months of May and June or the post-monsoon months of September and October. Day 2Janglik to Dayara Thatch

Distance: 6.5 km
Time: 5 hours
Altitude: 3,370 m (11,056 ft)

As we wake up, the excitement will be palpable in the air. You will be getting ready to embark on a trek that would take you through some of the most pristine and beautiful landscapes in the world.

After a healthy breakfast, we will set out, and within minutes, we will leave the hustle and bustle of civilization behind. The trail will snake through quaint villages, where people go about their daily lives. We will pass by temples, homes, fields and forests.

The trek will be a gradual ascent, and it will take us around 4-5 hours to reach the first campsite – Dayara Thatch. As we make our way up, we will be treated to stunning views of the valley below. The snow-capped Himalayas in the backdrop is sure to take your breath away.

The trail gently winds its way up as you leave the village behind. The ascent is gradual, and the forest is there to accompany you all the way. You’ll cross through the woods several times before arriving at your campsite for the night.

As we trek further up the mountains, we’ll come across picturesque clearings in which we can take short breaks and hydrate ourselves. Be sure to take in the views and breathe in the fresh Himalayan air!

Dayara Thatch is a beautiful meadow where you can find breathtaking views of horses grazing in the wild. During peak season, it’s full of colourful little flowers beneath your feet. If you’re a nature photography enthusiast, this is the place for you.

Day 3Dayara Thatch to Litham

Distance: 3.5 km
Time: 2 hours
Altitude: 3,570 m (11,713 ft)

After a peaceful night’s sleep, we awaken slowly to the sound of the forest and the mountains around us. We take a few deep breaths and begin our yoga practice, letting the fresh air and beauty of nature wash away any stress or worries. As we move through our poses, we notice the sun starting to peek over the mountains, casting a beautiful pink and orange glow across the sky.

The trek starts with a gradual ascent through the forests, crossing streams and sometimes walking on wooden bridges over them. If you’re visiting during the pre-monsoon season, you might even have to cross snow-bridges instead of streams!

The trek is easy and short, so we take our time enjoying the views and listening to the sounds of nature. We cross the Chandranahan stream and finally reach our destination: a beautiful meadow with a stunning view of the mountains.

After crossing the Chandranahan valley, you will be able to spot your tents and your campsite for the next couple of days. The Chandaranahan waterfall will be clearly visible from your spot, so take some time to explore the area and enjoy the view. The Litham campsite is also a great place to play games and bond with your trek mates. Snacks, dinner, and rest are all here tonight.

Day 4Litham to Chandranahan Lake & back

Distance: 6 km
Time: 4 hours
Altitude: 4,240 m (13,910 ft)

The Chandranahan Lake is fed by the snow melting off the massive mountains that surround it – a sight to see in itself. The clear, glacial water is icy cold and refreshing. The Chandarnahan Lake Trek is very popular for trekkers. Some trekkers choose to complete the Buran Ghati trek, and some come especially for Chandranahan Lake.

The trek up to this beautiful lake is quite steep. As a result, you gain a lot of altitude in a small amount of time and distance. You will have to cross the Chandranahan stream again, and follow the trail deeper into the Chandranahan valley. The trail will take you towards the snout of the waterfall. The waterfall is a beautiful sight, and it’s definitely worth the trek up to see it.

As we reach the lake, we will spend some time there, taking in the pristine beauty of our surroundings. Acclimatizing to the high altitude and listening to local stories narrated by our guide, we will be back at the campsite for a hot lunch.

What a perfect way to spend an afternoon!

Day 5Litham to Dunda

Distance: 5.5 km
Time: 3 hours
Altitude: 4,100 m (13,450 ft)

The trek from the tree line to Dunda is a difficult one, as you must cross boulders and scree-laden trails. However, the view of the valley is worth the effort, and Dunda is the perfect place to rest before crossing the Buran Ghati Pass.

Make sure to stick with your guide, trek leader, and trek mates as you cross the streams that flow along the way. Once you reach Dunda, take in the beauty of your surroundings and prepare for the journey ahead.

A gradual walk from Litham will take you to the campsite in just three hours, and once you’re there, you’ll be given a demo and proper training on how to use your technical equipment. You’ll then be ready for the exciting ascent to the summit of the Buran Ghati trek.

Make sure you have a hearty lunch because you’ll be starting your trek at 3 in the night. Dinner will be early so that you can get a good night’s sleep before the challenge of the climb awaits you.

Day 6Dunda to River Camp via Buran Ghati Pass

Distance: 9 km
Time: 7 hours
Altitude: 4,572 m (15,000 ft)

Today is the most important and exciting day of the trek – the day you cross the Buran Ghati pass!

We will be starting the climb at around 4 in the morning, so you’ll need to wake up early, have early breakfast, and get ready with all your technical equipment to start the climb. The climb is initially steep but becomes gradual as you move up the slope and closer to the pass.

Once you reach the Buran Ghati pass, take in the amazing views on the other side, and take a peek at the route you have to descend. You’ll see that it seems like an almost vertical wall!

Your guide and trek leader will be safely lowering each of you down from the pass one by one. Remember the safety training given the previous evening. Have patience, and don’t forget to wear a wind-cheater. You’ll need it at the top of the Buran Ghati Pass to stay warm among the gusts of cold winds.

Once you have safely descended, you will find yourself on a large flat ground from where we will start descending towards our campsite for the night. If there’s enough snow, we will be sliding down most of the way until we reach the campsite. The descent is fast and we will camp for the night next to the river.

Day 7River Camp to Barua

Distance: 4 km (Trek) & 230 km (Drive)
Time: 1.5 hours & 7 hours
Altitude: 2,276 m (7,467 ft)

Today is the last day of the Buran Ghati trek, and it will be an emotional one as you’ll be parting ways with your guide, trek leader, and trek mates. We will be descending down the valley. The trail is wide, and well-marked till Barua. It passes through small meadows and forests.

Once you reach Barua, bid adieu to your guide, staff, leaders, and board your vehicles. Your vehicles will drop you at Shimla, and that’ll be the end of your Buran Ghati trek.

Day 8Buffer Day

We keep a buffer day in our pass-crossing treks or long treks because of the many hurdles we might face. For example, bad weather (heavy snowfall, or rain). Therefore, it becomes risky to cross the Buran Ghati pass or to carry on trekking.

However, it must be a unanimous decision to use the buffer day. All the participants will be required to pay 1,500/- INR if the group decides to use the buffer day. The amount will be collected by your trek leader in cash.

Best Time For Buran Ghati Trek

Buran Ghati Temperature & Weather

Choosing the best time to trek means considering what kind of weather and flora you want to experience. Here is how the seasons break down:

Buran Ghati Trek in Summer (May to June)

The Buran Ghati trek is popular during the summer because of the dramatic wall of ice at the Buran Pass. Many adventure seekers are attracted to the opportunity to rappel down an ice wall while crossing the pass.

The snowfields begin at Dhunda and extend to the pass. Even after crossing the pass, trekkers will still have to walk through snow for another hour. By late June, the snow starts to melt, but there will still be enough snow slides to have an adrenaline-pumping trek. In the summer, wildflowers bloom around campsites, and the colors on the trail gradually shift from white shades into greens and yellows.

One of the trek’s highlights is crossing the Buran Pass, which involves rappelling down an icy wall. This may sound daunting, but don’t worry – you’ll be well-equipped with all the necessary gear and guidance from experienced guides.

Not only is the Buran Ghati trek an incredible physical challenge, but it’s also a feast for the senses. From Snowfields that extend as far as the eye can see to colorful wildflowers blooming around your campsite, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty at every turn.

Buran Ghati Trek in Autumn (September to October)

Autumn brings a different kind of beauty to the Buran Ghati trek – the colors change as the leaves on the trees turn into shades of red, orange, and yellow. The weather is mild, and the air is fresh, making for a comfortable trekking experience.

The Buran Pass may still have some snow during this time, but it is not enough to require rappelling, so you’ll have the chance to trek through rocky terrain and experience the changing colors of nature. This allows trekkers to focus on enjoying the stunning surroundings and taking in the jaw-dropping views from the pass.

Autumn is also an excellent time for bird watching – keep your eyes peeled for the Himalayan Monal, a colorful bird in the Himalayan region. You may even spot some wildlife, like Himalayan Tahr. This season offers a unique trekking experience, with the beauty of changing leaves and the thrill of spotting wildlife.

By the end of October, there may be chances of the first snowfall of the year, adding to the beauty and excitement of the trek.

Buran Ghati Trek in Monsoon (July to August)

In India, the Monsoon season brings lots of rainfall and the possibility of landslides, so it’s not the ideal time to trek through the Himalayas. The permissions for the Buran Ghati Trek are also not usually granted during this time.

However, trekking during the Monsoon can bring unique experiences – the waterfalls along the trail may be at their strongest, and the streams will be full. The greenery will also be at its peak, making for a picturesque trek through the Himalayas.

Buran Ghati Trek in Winter (November to April)

Winter brings challenges to the Buran Ghati trek, with low temperatures and the possibility of heavy snowfall. The snow makes it impossible for anyone to cross the high-altitude Buran Pass. The temperatures at the pass can go as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

However, winter also brings beauty to the trek – everything is blanketed in snow, making for a picturesque trek. The snow at the Buran Pass may be thick enough to require ice axes and crampons, allowing you to experience the thrill of climbing through snow and ice.

Buran Ghati Pass is closed in winter because of soft snow and avalanche danger, but other trails in the Himalayas still offer beautiful winter trekking experiences.
