Mt. Black Peak Expedition - Advenchar

Mt. Black Peak Expedition

Black Peak, or Kalanag as it’s known in the local dialect, is a majestic mountain that dominates the Bandarpunch massif in the Ruinsara Valley. Standing tall at an awe-inspiring 6,287 meters, it is the highest peak in the Saraswati Range of mountains. Notoriously difficult to climb, Black Peak is a daunting challenge for even experienced mountaineers.

But it’s not just the climb that makes Black Peak a must-climb mountain. It’s also the breathtaking beauty of its location. Majestic peaks such as Swargarohini, Bhagirathi Massif, and many others offer stunning views throughout the climb. Black Peak’s route passes through the Govind National Park, and is abundant in diverse flora and fauna, adding to its already insurmountable beauty.

The trek itself is a challenging mix of alpine meadows, pine forests, moraine ridges, and glacial basins. The continuously thinning air at high altitudes adds to the challenge of walking across crevassed snowfields and glaciers, as well as navigating miles of rocky moraines.

The final climb up Black Peak is particularly demanding and requires specific mountaineering equipment and skills. A 75 feet high vertical ice wall with a daunting 70-degree gradient lies on the route to the summit.

That being said, for experienced mountaineers, Black Peak offers an unforgettable adventure. Aspiring climbers need to possess Mountaineering certification or have vast experience in high-altitude trekking and extreme temperature to undertake this challenging expedition.

Mt. Black Peak Expedition Itinerary

Day 1Dehradun to Sankri

Distance: 190 km
Time: 10 hours
Sankri Altitude: 1,900 m (6,230 ft)

Day 1 of your exciting expedition from Dehradun to Sankri is all about soaking in the breathtaking views and embracing the local culture. We begin our day with an early start, gathering all trekkers at the meeting point by 7 am to embark on a long drive up to Sankri – a mountainous haven in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

Although the day’s plan mainly consists of settling into the fresh mountain air and recovering from the nine-hour drive, it’s crucial to leave early. Why? Firstly, to give our bodies enough rest to gear up for the Black Peak Expedition. And secondly, mountain roads are notorious for their unpredictability, so we need to account for delays.

Our destination, Sankri, is a bustling trailhead for several popular treks, like Har ki Dun, Baraadsar Lake, Bali Pass, Kedarkantha, Dev Kyara, and Phulara Ridge. Situated amidst the awe-inspiring mountain ranges, this little village is a sight to behold.

The scenic drive from Dehradun takes us through winding mountain roads, so if you struggle with motion sickness, you might want to buckle up! But don’t miss out on the picturesque landscape-towering trees, vast fields, and jagged mountains cut into steps for farming are just some of the views that await.

As we traverse through small patches of busy roads with village shops and long, empty stretches, we eagerly anticipate the constant shift between noise and calmness. And when hunger strikes, we stop by local dhabas to savor some of the region’s popular cuisines.

The last two hours of the drive is a smooth, forested road that outdoes even the initial breathtaking views. A glimpse of the forest sparkle is enough to refresh your senses before reaching our cozy homestay with comfortable rooms and a warm, home-cooked meal.

Though Sankri may lack a phone network, you can still connect with the world through the loan of Wi-Fi from a local shop. All this experience is more than worth the struggle! We expect to reach our destination by 7 pm.

Day 2Sankri to Taluka (Drive) & Taluka to Seema (Trek)

Today promises to be a thrilling and action-packed day as we set off from Sankri for our Black Peak Expedition. Our day starts with an early breakfast between 7-8 AM which gives us just enough time to soak in the morning sun and the mesmerizing beauty of the village before we depart at 9 AM.

As we hit the dusty road, an exciting journey awaits us on a narrow road that can be covered by a vehicle. However, be warned, this won’t be a breezy ride. We’re likely to encounter roadblocks due to fallen mountain debris, which may slow us down between patches on the 12 km stretch. But don’t worry, our route is lined with freshwater streams with spectacular views of the forest and mountains. If that’s not invigorating enough, a deep gorge with a stream (nalla) flowing underneath will make your blood pump and your mind refreshed.

Journeying to the end of the road, we’ll reach Taluka, a small, colorful mountain village bursting with life. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see rows of mules standing obediently in a line, facing the mountain, and a dozen tiny canteens lined up to serve you hot food before the trek. Taluka is the starting point for a lot of popular treks like Har ki Dun and Bali Pass, making it forever bustling with contagious energy from trekkers.

Once we’ve picked up our packed lunches for the day, we begin our trek towards Seema, our first campsite. Although we won’t gain much altitude today (just about 200 m from Taluka to Seema), the length of the walk is quite challenging.

The trek starts with even land, and the strong scent of the forest, lush landscapes adorned with half a dozen waterfalls. While the land is mostly even, we’ll encounter challenges like jumping over massive fallen trees and big boulders. Nonetheless, the gradual inclines won’t break our spirit, and the boisterous Supin River will follow us faithfully throughout the trek.

Day 3Seema to Ruinsara Tal

Distance: 14 km
Time: 7 hours
Sankri Altitude: 3,600 m (11,810 ft)

Today’s trek takes us from Seema to Ruinsara Tal on Day 3 of our Black Peak Expedition.

The 14 km distance we’ll be trekking will take us about 7-8 hours, but it’s well worth the effort. As we approach the high-altitude, picturesque, sacred lake of Ruinsara Tal, the bright blue water will take our breath away. Surrounded by lush alpine vegetation of all vivid colors, it’s no surprise that this is a popular trail for trekkers visiting the Har ki Doon Valley.

As we make our way towards the lake, we’ll be walking the trail said to have been taken by the Pandavas on their journey to heaven through the visible Swargarohini peak. The history and legends surrounding the area truly make this an unforgettable experience.

The encompassing beauty of Ruinsara Tal is something that has to be seen with one’s own eyes! We’ll be camping near the lake where we can spend our time experiencing the magnificent landscape in all its glory. We’ll end our day with awe-inspiring views of the majestic Himalayan range.

Day 4Ruinsara Tal to Kyarkoti Base Camp

Distance: 7 km
Time: 6 Hours
Base Camp Altitude: 4,050 m (13,290 ft)

As you set out on this day for your trek from Ruinsara Tal to Kyarkoti Base Camp, the breathtaking sight of the summit of Black Peak begins to emerge. The campsite at Kyarkoti is a sprawling expanse of lush green grasslands nestled amidst boulders and snow-capped mountains. A crystal-clear spring trickles down nearby, offering a source of refreshing hydration. As you gaze in awe at the magnificent peak that looms majestically before you, you can feel a surge of excitement rushing through your veins.

The Kyarkoti Base Camp, also known as the Black Peak base camp, lies at the base of Swargarohini, surrounded by stunning vistas of the Bandarpoonch glacier. The entire base camp is a meadow strewn with boulders that form a natural barrier against the elements. Take your time to soak in the majestic surroundings and absorb the beauty of the wilderness. You’ve reached the foothills of the towering Black Peak, and this will be your home for the next few exciting days of the Black Peak Expedition.

Day 5Rest and Acclimatization at Basecamp

Altitude: 4,050 m (13,290 ft)

After four days of trekking, day five welcomes you to a momentous pause. Take the day to recharge and acclimatize to the terrain, altitude, and temperature of your surroundings. There’s a lot to be done during your stay- from distributing and setting up gear to technical training and practicing on the icy slopes- but today is a prime opportunity to refuel and get ready for when the action picks up once again. Basecamp sits at a breathless altitude of 4050M, so take it easy and let your body adjust to the demanding climb ahead.

Day 6 Base Camp to Advance Base Camp (Load Ferry)

Distance: 5 km
Time: 6 Hours
Advance Base Camp Altitude: 4,500 m (14,765 ft)

The trek today involves a considerable altitude gain, but it also serves as an opportunity for you to acclimate yourself to the peak’s slopes and terrain.

The trail begins with a stroll through beautiful grasslands that will undoubtedly encapsulate your senses. As you continue onward, you’ll encounter a boulder-filled patch, which will require some dexterity to traverse. However, it’s nothing that a smart trekker won’t be able to handle.

After the boulders, the trail takes a sharp turn with a steep climb through a small section known for landslides. While this part of the trek may be a bit nerve-wracking, the view from the top is worth overcoming it. Once you’ve successfully navigated through the area, you’ll find yourself in a moraine-filled land, which is nothing short of a raw ethereal sight.

Finally, you’ll reach the glacier. Take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty and power of the glacier. The entire climb should take approximately 4-5 hours, so make sure to hydrate, take small rests, and take in the breathtaking views of your surroundings.

Day 7Advance Base Camp to Camp 1

Distance: 3 km
Time: 4 Hours
Camp 1 Altitude: 5,070 m (16,635 ft)

The next milestone on the Black Peak Expedition is the ascent from Advance Base Camp to Camp 1. It may seem daunting, but the terrain will be familiar, with moraines, glaciers, and ice. The good news is that everything seems easier the second time around, and you’ll soon become more confident with each step forward.

This part of the trek is a mixed walk of both moraine and glacier, providing an excellent opportunity for contemplation as you take in the stunning views around you. You won’t have to worry about running out of water because there is an ample supply available.

Once you reach Camp 1, you’ll catch your breath and take in the incredible view of Black Peak, which is easily visible from the campsite. It is an unforgettable experience to camp just next to the glacier, providing an even more immersive experience than the day’s trek.

Day 8Rest & Acclimatization Day

On the Black Peak Expedition, one of the most critical factors to ensure summit success and safety is proper rest and acclimatization. This day at Camp 1 is designated for exactly this, and the expedition leader will be the ultimate deciding factor in how to utilize this day.

The importance of acclimatization in high-altitude mountaineering cannot be overstated. Each person’s body reacts differently to increasing elevation, and adjusting to the lower oxygen levels found at high altitudes can take days if not weeks. To help with this process, climbers must spend time at predetermined elevations to get their bodies accustomed to the altitude. This is where the “rest and acclimatization day” comes into play.

In the case of the Black Peak Expedition, Camp 1 serves as an intermediate acclimatization point. The team will spend one entire day here, acclimatizing to the thin air, resting, and preparing for the climb further up the mountain. The expedition leader is responsible for deciding what activities the team will undertake. Typically, rest and relaxation are essential on this day. It is crucial to get adequate sleep, hydrate, and eat nutritious meals to prepare for the upcoming climb.

Day 9Camp 1 to Summit Camp

Distance: 2.5 km
Time: 5 Hours
Camp 1 Altitude: 5,500 m (18,045 ft)

As we begin our expedition from Camp 1 to Summit Camp, we are greeted with awe-inspiring views of Swargarohini and Bandarpooch, towering to the North and South respectively. The terrain here is full of both hidden and open crevasses, which provide a challenge that the brave adventurer in us will relish.

It is important to take things slowly to adapt to the environment and terrain to make your way to the summit of Black Peak. The ascent is certainly difficult, yet the challenges it poses only add to the thrill of the climb. You will find enough water sources along the way to help you stay hydrated.

The walk is a mix of moraine and glacier, where you will come across incredible views of Black Peak from the camp. The camp itself is located next to the glacier and provides the perfect spot for taking in the magnificent scenery that surrounds you.

With each step you take, the world around you transforms, and the experience is second to none.

Day 10Summit Camp to Mt. Black Peak Summit

Distance: 2.5 km
Time: 7 Hours
Camp 1 Altitude: 6,387 m (20,955 ft)

The journey from Summit Camp to the top of Mt. Black Peak is not for the faint of heart. In the middle of the night, under freezing temperatures and violent winds, the summit climb begins. The challenge is immediate and it demands exceptional skill, physical ability, and mental toughness.

Scaling Black Peak is by no means an easy feat. Navigating the vertical ice walls that have a gradient between 70-75 degrees and are anywhere from 75-85 feet high requires tremendous focus and concentration. It’s a test of strength and endurance, as every move must be made with precision. That’s why we use fixed ropes and jumars to aid us in ascension, ensuring safety.

As we approach the ridgeline, the intensity of the climb keeps climbing. The steepness is unforgiving, and everything is harder at this altitude. But isn’t that the point? The challenge that Black Peak presents is part of what makes this climb so special.

At the summit, there’s a sense of accomplishment that’s hard to put into words. After making it through hours of grueling ascent, the flatness of the peak feels like a victory all on its own. We realize we’ve scaled one of the most beautiful peaks in the world. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, and the feeling of accomplishment is indescribable.

As we make our descent, we must be just as careful as we were on the way up. Despite the fact that most people worry about the ascent, the descent can be just as challenging. It’s crucial to take it slow and steady to avoid missteps. We aim to finish our expedition in 7-8 hours and return to the sanctuary of our tents before the snow becomes unstable.

Day 11Summit Camp to Kyarkoti Base Camp

As you make your way back down the majestic mountain, the scenery changes from steep and rocky terrain to lush vegetation and flowing rivers. Don’t forget to take in the views of the towering snow-capped peaks that surround you.

The journey towards Base Camp is a great opportunity to reflect on the incredible accomplishment of reaching the summit and to savor the feeling of having achieved a grand physical feat. The descent also provides a unique way to witness just how far you have come, in every sense of the word. Take a moment to appreciate the majestic surroundings that nature has provided, and to acknowledge the awe-inspiring power that mountains hold.

Day 12Kyarkoti Base Camp to Ruinsara Tal

Today, we say farewell to our base camp and begin our descent down the mountain. We’ll pack up our gear, making sure we leave no trace behind, and trek back to the breathtaking Ruinsara Tal. As we make our way along the trail, we’ll take in the stunning panoramic views of the valleys and peaks that we hiked through to get here. Perhaps we’ll even spot some of the local wildlife frolicking near the banks of the sparkling rivers snaking through the landscape. Tonight, we’ll retire to our comfortable and cozy tents surrounding the tranquil waters of the Ruinsara Tal, where we can continue to soak up the enchanting wilderness that surrounds us.

Day 13Ruinsara Tal to Seema

Savor a delicious Breakfast as we start our return trek to Seema, accompanied by a Packed lunch to keep us fueled and energized throughout. Take in the beauty of the landscape as we make our way back, succumbing to nature’s peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. As we approach our destination, the Seema camps will soon come into view towards late afternoon. Settle into your cozy and comfortable tents for a well-earned overnight break, surrounded by stunning vistas of this mesmerizing terrain.

Day 14Seema to Taluka (Trek) & Taluka to Sankri (Drive)

The last day of your Black Peak Expedition kicks off with a morning trek back to Taluka, following a satisfying breakfast. As you descend down the mountain, take in the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. After reaching Taluka, your trek comes to a close. For a comfortable overnight stay, settle at one of the hotels or guest houses awaiting you in Sankri, where you’ll be driven upon your return from Taluka. Make sure that you’re well-rested and ready to enjoy your last day in the mountains.

Day 15Sankri to Dehradun

The drive from Sankri to Dehradun marks the conclusion of your epic Black Peak expedition, but not without a fitting celebration to top it off!

As we’ve mentioned earlier, high-altitude weather and other conditions can be unpredictable, so we recommend scheduling extra days between the end of your expedition and your travel arrangements back home.

This will give you ample time to bask in the glory of your achievement and take in the stunning sceneries that surround you.  Trust us, your Black Peak experience deserves a grand finale!

Day 16Reserve Day

In the case of unforeseen circumstances, the Reserve Day on the Black Peak Expedition itinerary could potentially be utilized. Bad weather or other obstacles that delay the scheduled plans could leave us behind the set timeline. However, the Reserve Day acts like a saving grace, providing extra time to make up for any setbacks that could hinder reaching our final destination.

The Reserve Day presents an opportunity to accommodate any unforeseen challenges that could occur before the journey concludes. It is like a safety net, enabling our team to complete the Black Peak Expedition safely and on time. Whether it is heavy snowfall, a sudden increase in wind speed, or any other unexpected occurrence, the Reserve Day will come to our aid if we need it.

Having the Reserve Day in our itinerary not only provides us with a buffer, but also peace of mind, and allows us to enjoy the expedition without worrying about any unforeseeable obstacles.
