The night will be spent in a hotel in Leh. In the evening, you can dine out in the local restaurants and sample some delicious local cuisine.

Day 2Leh to Likir (Drive) and Trek to Yangthang

Distance: 10 km
Time Taken: 6 hours
Max Altitude: 3,720 m (12,205 ft)

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we will travel by taxi to the starting point of the Sham Valley trek – Likir Village. This small town is situated at an altitude of 3700 meters and is only 55 kilometers away from Leh. You will be mesmerized by the picturesque scenery of this place.

The journey may be short, but it is still going to be a warm one. The breathtaking scenery that greets us here is one that dreams are made of! You will pass via some of Ladakh’s most famous landmarks, including the Sangam, Magnetic Hill, and the Pathar Sahib Gurudwara.

Once we reach Likir, the actual trek will begin at Sham Valley. We will make our way up to the Phobe La Pass at an altitude of 3590 meters. With determined steps and a lot of courage, we will go further up to the Chagatse La Pass (3720 meters). From here, the view is simply breathtaking!

We will pitch our tents near a stream in Yangthang village in the evening. This small village (3630 meters) is the perfect place to rest and recharge before going further up the next day.

We will have dinner and enjoy the peacefulness of the night.

Day 3Yangthang to Hemis Shukpachan

Distance: 10 km
Time Taken: 5 hours
Max Altitude: 3,880 m (12,730 ft)

Today is an invigorating experience for trekkers as the gradient between the ascent and descent of Yangthang to Hemis Shukpachan is gentle, making it a relatively easy trek.

The trail takes you northwards, firstly downhill across a stream before eventually heading west towards Tsermangchan La (3880 m). After a short break at the pass, you begin to descend towards Hemis Shukpachan.

Hemis Shukpachan is a sight for sore eyes; named after a grove of cedars, it is one of Ladakh’s most stunning villages. The landscape surrounding you is sparkling streams, willowy trees, and large barley fields – the only color amongst a desolate rocky mountain.

The scene that greets trekkers here is nothing short of mesmerizing. The water running through the streams creates a soothing sound; the barley fields look like an array of tiny green islands in a sea of grey rocks. The sound of the wind whistling through the trees creates a dreamy atmosphere, and the fresh scent of cedars wafting in the air is a refreshing experience.

Trekkers will feel relaxed and energized simultaneously – perfect for continuing on with the rest of Sham Valley Trek!

Day 4Hemis Shukpachan to Temisgam

Distance: 12 km

The Sham Valley Trek on the fourth day is easy, taking trekkers up between two hillocks to the Mebtak La at 3,790 meters above sea level. On the way, they will pass vibrant prayer flags marking their ascent and be treated to breathtaking views of the valley below.

At the top of the mountain, trekkers can take a break and be in awe of nature’s beauty. The snow-capped peaks, crystal clear rivers winding through the valleys, and lush green forests are a sight to behold.

As they continue down the gorge, they will reach Ang, a picturesque village with apricot orchards. Trekkers can take a moment to rest and feel at home in the peaceful surroundings.

Finally, after reaching Temisgam on the highway, trekkers will be able to look back proudly on what they have achieved during their journey. They will also feel happy returning to Leh, where they can reflect on their adventure and all the magical memories they have made on the Sham Valley Trek.
