Stok Kangri Trek

Stok Kangri Trek

  • 9 Days
  • Group : 8-15 People
  • Guided Trek
  • Difficult
  • Start: Leh, Ladakh
  • Altitude
    Max Altitude : 6,135 m

Stok Kangri has swiftly grown to become one of India’s most sought-after trekking spots for the best reasons!

It is one of the highest trekkable summits in the world! Yes, you heard that right! Stok Kangri (6,135 m) is higher than the highest mountain in Europe (Mt Elbrus, 5,640 m) and that in Africa (Mt Kilimanjaro, 5890 m)! So, you can easily understand why Stok Kangri is on every trekker’s bucket list!

Besides, you get an unobstructed view of some of the most imposing Himalayan peaks from the summit, making this an experience of a lifetime. While the Stok Kangri trek is not exceptionally technical, it is not for beginners because the 8-day trek starts to get excruciatingly challenging on the day of the summit climb.

However, the gratifying feeling of traversing a 6000-er will overpower the sub-zero temperatures, slippery snowy slopes, and unpredictable terrain you will encounter.

Stok Kangri Trek Itinerary

Day 1Arrival at Leh

Altitude: 3,500 m (11,480 ft)

Our Stok Kangri trek starts from Leh. You can arrive via various routes, but we suggest you catch a flight.

Not only will you reach quite fast, but you will also get sufficient time to acclimatize to the weather and overall atmosphere at a higher altitude.

Day 2Acclimatization at Leh

Today is the perfect opportunity to get a quick break before the adventure begins!

You can take a walk through the picturesque town of Leh, discover ancient monasteries, and survey around for affordable markets and unique eateries!

This is a rest day, and we will use it to acclimatize to our surroundings, and when you are in a town as culturally rich as Leh, even the rest day is filled with pleasant surprises.

Rest for the night at a hotel.

Day 3Leh to Chang Ma via Stok Village

Distance: 15 Km Drive, 6 Km Trek
Time Taken: 35 Min drive, 4 hours Trek
Altitude:
3,980 m (13,058 ft)

The 3rd day of our Stok Kangri Trek starts with a  short drive. We will drive from Leh to the famous village of Stok.

It will only take about 20 mins, but even within this short journey, you will be met with ethereal natural beauty. Towering trees, and colorful flora against a snow-blanketed backdrop, you will feel like you are in heaven!

Its vibrant natural landscape has contributed considerably to Stok Village’s popularity. But another factor making Stok village a tourist magnet is the royal palace and museum situated here!

We make a pit stop here to immerse ourselves in the rare flora and fauna and learn a thing or two from the historical artifacts of Stok.

After that, we will start trekking toward Chang Ma. It won’t be easy, so you better prepare your knees.

We might experience some snow, but once we arrive at our campsite, we can set up camp and collapse (figuratively) for the night, forgetting all the physical exertion.

Day 4Chang Ma to Mankorma

Distance: 5 Km
Time Taken: 3-4 hours
Altitude:
4,330 m (14,206 ft)

In contrast to the previous day, today’s trek will be much easier.

The trail we will follow will take us through flat, barren stretches of Ladakh.

You will get the authentic taste of the ‘cold desert’ Ladakh as you go through the gray and desolate landscape. However, a few small streams might cross your path here and there.

Despite being arid, this trail is uniquely beautiful, starkly contrasting with the rich valleys we have crossed so far!

We will trek for about 4 hours to reach Mankorma, our campsite, for the night.

Day 5Mankorma to Base Camp

Distance:  5 Km
Time Taken: 5-6 Hours
Altitude: 4,970 m (16,306 ft.)

On the 5th day, we will embark on a trek to reach the base camp.

It’s a 5-6 hour long trek. The trail should not be too challenging, but be firm-footed and stable for your safety.

The base camp is a comfortable spot. The land is laid in velvety soft grass, and the surrounding water bodies make it a pleasurable site for camping.

Moreover, the view from the base camp is unreal! You get a clear view of colossal peaks like Gulap Kangri, Parcha Kangri, and more!

You can walk down the soft grassy fields or just rest and prepare for the big upcoming adventure!

Day 6Rest, Acclimatization, and Training

The 6th day will be relaxing, as we will spend it in the base camp.

We will not only acclimatize to the sudden change in our surroundings, but the trek leader will also guide and brief you about the proceedings of the following days.

You will be given instructions about the basic do’s and don’ts, and precautionary measures,  followed by a short training. This is to make sure you are fully ready for the summit climb.

Get good rest today because the 7th day will start super early.

Day 7Summit Climb and back to Base Camp

Time Taken: 16-18 Hours
Altitude: 6,135 m (20,150 ft)

We will start our trek to the Stok Kangri at midnight.

The trail will be tricky, as we will cross glaciers, moraines, and considerably deep snow.

Your knees might feel like they are sinking in, but don’t give up just yet. Only a few more hours till we reach our final destination!

It will take about 8-9 hours for us to reach the summit ridge and another 2 hours to reach the top. But once we do arrive, all your exhaustion will fade away!

Why?

Because right in front of your eyes will be a splendid view, it will feel magical!

But worry not! All of this is very real and what you are experiencing right now is one of a kind.

You can see the Karakoram ranges in the north and the Zanskar ranges in the south. The majestic Saser Kangri will add a unique charm to the vast, mountainous landscape in front of you!

The morning sun will paint the entire landscape in a royal flush of orange, making it even more dreamlike!

Once you are content with the view of the summit, we will start descending to the base camp and retire there for the night.

Day 8Base Camp to Leh

Distance: 15 Km Trek, 15 Km Drive
Time Taken: 3-4 Hours Trek, 35 Min Drive
Altitude: 3,500 m (11,480 ft)

The eighth day marks the final day of our Stok Kangri trek. We will descend to Stok Village through the same route.

It sounds repetitive, but trust us, a trail seems a lot different on the way up vs. on the way down. So, you will get to explore the same route from a different perspective!

As we reach Leh, that is our cue! Time to part ways and bid adieu.

This marvelous adventure, filled with sudden adrenaline rushes, incredible views, picture-perfect trails, and more, will stay fresh in your hearts until your next trekking adventure!

Day 9Buffer Day

This day is a buffer day. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, or any other unforeseen circumstances, if we cannot reach the summit, we will make a second attempt on this day.
