Day 1New Jalpaiguri to Manebhanjan

Distance: 105 km
Time Taken: 3.5 hours (Drive)
Altitude: 1,970 m (6,400 ft.)

The small town of Manebhanjan is one of the most serene and tranquil places you’ll find in the entire region. Sprawling along the banks of the majestic Teesta river, this sleepy town offers a welcome escape from the bustling life of Siliguri.

The nearest railway station to Manebhanjan is New Jalpaiguri which is about 85 kilometres away. Travelling from New Jalpaiguri takes approximately three hours as you need to cross through dense forests and go over a few mountains.

When it comes to air travel, Bagdogra airport near Kolkata is your best bet.

If you haven’t booked your transport with us, you can travel from New Jalpaiguri or Bagdogra to Siliguri and then take a cab or bus to Manebhanjan.

The entire journey will take you along mountain boulevards, passing through tea estates and villages on the India-Nepal border. This location’s ambience is so peaceful that you will be able to relax completely. This is where the Sandakphu trek begins.

Note that there are several different starting points for this trek because the road is continuously being constructed in the area.

Day 2Manebhanjan to Tumling

Distance: 11 km
Time Taken: 7 hours
Altitude : 2,556 m (9,700 ft)

The trek from Manebhanjan to Tumling today can be a challenge because this will be the first day of your trek but you’ll come across some spectacular views in the process.

On the way to Tumling, there are three water sources – Chittrey, Lamyadhura, and Meghma each 1.5 hours apart.

Tumling is located 9,700 feet above sea level and is home to about ten or so Nepali families. In this area, they provide tea house accommodations for visitors all year round. You can find a signboard indicating the way to Singalila National Park ahead of you.

On the other side, there is an elevated trail that leads to Tonglu, a high mountain settlement. At Tumling, the border between Nepal and India blurs. There are no restrictions on who can enter the area. A magnificent view of the colossal Kanchenjunga peak can be seen. Tumling’s sunset is breathtaking.

Day 3Tumling to Kalipokhri

Distance: 14 km
Time Taken: 7 hours
Altitude : 3020 m (9,910 ft)

We will be trekking to Kalipokhri today. There are two water points on the way to Kalipokhri, Garibas and Kaiyakatta, which are approximately two hours apart.

You can see the elegant Sleeping Buddha from here, bathed in the first rays of the sun. If the sky is clear, the entire Kanchenjunga family can be seen.

The route to Kalipokhri passes through Singalila National Park’s beautiful forests. These forests are known for their diverse flora colours, and your heart will bloom alongside the flowers.

As you ascend, the trail becomes increasingly green. We’ll have dinner once we arrive at the campsite, and rest for the night.

Day 4Kalipokhri to Sandakphu

Distance: 6.5 km
Time Taken: 4 hours
Altitude: 3636 m (11,930 ft.)

We will start this day’s trek from Kalipokhri to Sandakphu. On the way, you have the opportunity to take in the breathtaking scenery. Enjoy the sights as you climb steep sections up to 12000 ft above sea level. The trek is relatively easy but has a gradual ascent at first, followed by a steeper ascent. The full length of the trail is about 6.5 kilometres – it’s worth it!

During the first hour of the trail, you will go through Bhagsa and Bikheybhanjang. When you reach a comparatively flat piece of land, you’ll have reached the Sandakphu summit point. From here you can see some of the highest mountains in the world – Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Makalu etc.

The temperature here will suddenly drop after the sunset so make sure that you come prepared.

Day 5Sandakphu to Mole

We will be waking up early to see the amazing sunrise over the highest mountains in the world! After being mesmerized by the sunset, we will have breakfast and start on our way to Mole.

From Sandakphu, fill your water bottles because the water sources aren’t plentiful on this trail.

An open pond near the Forest Post makes up Mole. There are a few muddy sections on this trail, as well as rocky paths lined up with gravel roads. However, Forests cover a large portion of the area. The sound of mountain birds chirping is soothing to the ears.

The entire trail is lined with rhododendron and alpine berries. This trail is the longest and most difficult of all the others. When it rains, the trail becomes more difficult to navigate. Throughout the trail, you can see spectacular snow-capped mountains.

Day 6 Mole to Gorkhey via Phalut

Distance: 21 km
Time Taken: 9 hours
Altitude: 3,595 m (11,794 ft)

On this day, we will trek from Mole to Gorkhey. This section of the trek will be 21 kilometres long and will take approximately 5-6 hours to complete.

Phalut, a zig-zag trail from Mole, will be on the route. From Mole to Phalut, you have the best chance of seeing Kanchenjunga. Phalut is a small grassland with little to no vegetation at all.

It is a small place with only an SSB Post and a guest house. We’ll need to get started early because the descent from Mole to Gorkhey is long and tiring. Gorkhey is located at a height of 7,546 feet above sea level. This is one of the most difficult trails on the Sandakphu trek, but the descent makes it more bearable.

The route has an initial descent followed by a series of gradual ascents to Phalut. Except for the last hour of a steep descent, levelled walks to Gorkhey follow. The harmony of flora and fauna in the forested landscape has a calming effect on trekkers’ minds. You’ll come across a lot of beautiful scenery.

Day 7Gorkhey to Sepi, & Drive to New Jalpaiguri

Distance: 15 km (Trek), 140 km (Drive)
Time Taken: 7 hours (Trek), 5 hours (Drive)
Altitude: 1898 m (6,230 ft)

On this day, we will trek to Sepi, a 15-kilometre stretch that takes 5-6 hours to complete. The trail is mostly flat, with a few ascents and descents thrown in for good measure.

Today, you’ll come across bamboo forests that are home to Red Pandas and Bears. So, keep your cameras ready.

We’ll arrive in Sepi after crossing the tranquil Sri River.

The last leg of this trek is the drive from Sepi to New Jalpaiguri. The distance between Sepi and New Jalpaiguri is approximately 140 kilometres, and it takes approximately 5 hours to travel. The entire journey can be exhausting.

By evening, you will have arrived in New Jalpaiguri. You can plan a hotel stay or book further travel according to this itinerary. You can also plan further travels to Darjeeling.

The Sandakphu trek is the ideal place to forget about your worries and fall in love with the natural world. It is simple to connect with oneself.

What is the best time to go for the Sandakphu Phalut trek?

The Sandakphu Phalut trek can be undertaken at various times of the year, each offering a unique experience. However, some periods are considered more ideal due to favorable weather conditions and stunning views.

Autumn (October to November) is widely regarded as the best time to undertake the Sandakphu Phalut trek. During these months, the sky is generally clear, providing trekkers with breathtaking views of the mountains. Spring (April to May) is another great period for this trek. This season allows trekkers to witness the vibrant bloom of rhododendrons and other Himalayan flowers, transforming the landscape into a colorful spectacle.

Winter (December to March) offers a different perspective of the trek altogether. The entire region gets covered in a blanket of snow, adding a magical touch to the landscape. February to April is particularly popular among travelers seeking to experience snowfall.

It’s worth noting that the Sandakphu Phalut trek is accessible for most of the year, barring the rainy months of May to August. During the monsoon, the trails can become slippery and challenging, and the views might be obscured by fog and rain clouds.

How long does the Sandakphu Phalut trek take?

The Sandakphu Phalut trek typically takes about 6 to 7 days to complete, depending on the specific itinerary. The duration includes both the trek and the return journey from NJP/Bagdogra.

What is the difficulty level of the Sandakphu Phalut trek?

The Sandakphu Phalut trek is often classified as a trek of easy difficulty, but it’s important to note that this can be subjective and may vary based on individual fitness levels and trekking experience.

Key factors contributing to this classification include:

  1. Altitude: The trek reaches a high altitude of 12,000 feet. While the ascent is gradual, allowing for better acclimatization, the altitude can still pose challenges such as altitude sickness.

  2. Trail Conditions: The trails are well-defined and do not require technical climbing skills. However, there are a few steep sections that can be challenging.

  3. Weather Conditions: Weather conditions can significantly impact the difficulty level of the trek. The changing scenes and varying weather conditions, especially during winter months, can make the trek more challenging.

  4. Duration: The trek typically spans around 7 days, which requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.

However, compared to other treks in the region, the Sandakphu Phalut trek is considered easy. This could be attributed to the well-marked trails, gradual ascents, and support provided during the trek.

While the Sandakphu Phalut trek has elements of moderate difficulty, with adequate preparation and support, it can be an easily manageable and rewarding experience.

What kind of physical fitness is required for the trek?

The Sandakphu Phalut trek, like other high-altitude treks, requires a moderate level of physical fitness. Here are some specific areas to focus on:

  1. Cardiovascular Endurance: This is perhaps the most important aspect of fitness for any trek. You should be able to jog or run for at least 30 minutes without getting overly tired. Regular cardio exercises like running, cycling, and swimming can help improve your stamina.

  2. Strength Training: Strength training exercises can help build endurance. Focus on exercises that strengthen your core and your lower body, as you’ll be relying heavily on these muscle groups during the trek.

  3. Flexibility: Flexibility can help avoid muscle strains and sprains on the trek. Regular stretching exercises can help improve flexibility.

  4. Altitude Fitness: The trek reaches a maximum altitude of over 12,000 feet. At such altitudes, the air is thinner and contains less oxygen, which can lead to altitude sickness. While it’s not possible to fully prepare for this in advance, spending time at high altitudes before the trek can help your body acclimatize.

  5. Healthy Diet: A balanced diet can provide the necessary energy for the trek. Include plenty of proteins and carbohydrates in your diet, and stay hydrated.

Before beginning any new exercise regimen, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions. Also, remember that mental preparation is equally important. A positive attitude and determination can go a long way in overcoming physical challenges during the trek.
